Use Claude Code in JetBrains IDEs

3 min read

Claude Code runs inside JetBrains IDEs through a dedicated plugin that wraps the claude CLI in the IDE’s integrated terminal. The plugin doesn’t bundle its own CLI copy, so install both. It supports IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, Android Studio, WebStorm, PhpStorm, GoLand, and most other JetBrains IDEs.

1. Install the Claude Code CLI

Install the CLI first — the plugin shows a “Cannot launch Claude Code” notice when claude isn’t on your PATH. See macOS and Linux or Windows.

2. Install the JetBrains plugin

Open Settings → Plugins, search the Marketplace for Claude Code [Beta], install it, and restart the IDE.

3. Run claude in the integrated terminal

claude

What it does: run from the IDE’s built-in terminal, every feature turns on automatically — Cmd+Esc / Ctrl+Esc quick launch, changes in the IDE diff viewer, your selection shared as context, and Cmd+Option+K / Alt+Ctrl+K to insert a @src/auth.ts#L1-99 reference.

4. Connect an external terminal with /ide

/ide

What it does: links a claude session running outside the IDE to your open JetBrains window, confirming with a line like Connected to IntelliJ IDEA.. If the IDE has no plugin yet, /ide installs it and asks you to restart.

5. Show diffs in the IDE

/config

What it does: set Diff tool to auto to open changes in the IDE diff viewer, or terminal to keep them inline. The entry appears only while connected. Claude also reads the IDE’s inspection diagnostics through a built-in ide MCP server.

If it fails

This plugin is the JetBrains sibling of the VS Code extension and shares the same ~/.claude setup.
